Working as an Apprentice Transport Planner at Milestone Infrastructure you will be an integrated part of the transport planning team delivering projects in partnership with Peterborough City Council. The role covers a wide range of transport related disciplines including the development of Business Cases and supporting information, such as traffic models, to fund new infrastructure and public realm improvements.
Entry Requirements
- You must have the permanent Right to Work in the UK
- GCSE or equivalent English (Grade C/4) Essential
- GCSE or equivalent in 3 other subjects (Grade C/4) Essential
- GCSE or equivalent Maths (Grade C/4) Essential
- Have or expected to achieve A Level or equivalent 2 additional subjects (Grade C or above by September 2025) Essential
- Have or expected to achieve A Level or equivalent Geography, Maths or Economics (Grade C or above September 2025) Essential
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- To develop and maintain a good understanding of national and local policy on transport and development management.
- To develop and maintain a good understanding of the transport networks, facilities, and characteristics of the area.
- To assist in the development of transport Business Cases for new funding, especially the provision of supporting information using a variety of technical software packages including PTV VISUM and AIMSUN (traffic modelling), Junctions10, TUBA and COBALT.
- To develop the skills to provide advice on the transport impacts of proposed development, and developments’ compliance with transport policy, to senior members of the team
- To assist in the preparation of reports and written evidence in relation to planning applications and, where appropriate, for appeals in the planning process.
- To liaise with network and industry colleagues and external professional bodies to develop and maintain knowledge of good practice within the planning and transport development management field.
- To develop the skills to ensure that allocated day to day correspondence and other communications are dealt with professionally, speedily, and effectively.
What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
- This post will require the successful applicant to commit to the opportunity to complete a BSc Degree Apprenticeship in Transport Planning (subject to entry criteria being met)
- Under the Milestone Emerging Talent scheme, you will have the opportunity to study for your Transport Planning Degree which requires you to undertake a minimum of 6 hours off the job training/learning during your normal working week once your apprenticeship programme commences in September 2025
What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
- As a Milestone Degree Apprentice you will be recruited on a permanent contract and after completing your apprenticeship you will be promoted into the business. You will be part of the transport planning career grade system which provides a progressive pathway to Principal Transport Planner should the right, experience, skills and knowledge be obtained.
- It expected you will work towards the Transport Planning Professional (TPP) professional qualification with Milestone providing full development and training support.
- Milestone will also reimburse any membership fees for either Chartered Institute of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) or the Transport Planning Society (TPS)
