About The Role

We are looking for a Senior Design Engineer (Bridges) to join our design team in Oxford.

The Oxfordshire Highways contract is an integrated contract delivering a range of services in partnership with Oxfordshire County Council. Oxfordshire County Council maintains over 1000 highway structures, many of them with historic interest and key significance in the transport network, providing a varied and challenging workload. Our client is prioritising funding to improve the condition of its bridge stock, and therefore we are seeking to recruit bridge design staff at various levels to expand the Oxford team.

The Senior Design Engineer will play an important role in a small team of engineers and technicians to design and deliver a range of projects and functions to maintain this vital asset, to agreed budgets and programmes.

You'll:

· Lead the preparation of designs for a wide variety of bridge replacement, strengthening and maintenance schemes in close collaboration with our client to identify and meet the project objectives.

· Work closely with project managers, our commercial and construction teams to plan and implement these schemes from ‘start to finish’ within budget and to programme, and in compliance with quality, safety and environmental objectives, including liaison with internal and external stakeholders.

· Line manage and/or mentor some staff within the team, ensuring work is planned and undertaken safely and efficiently.

· Assist in other structures asset management activities such as principal and special inspections, structural assessments, maintenance prioritisation, and sub-standard structures reviews.

· Work closely with project managers and other local team members to provide technical support to a variety of highway and transport schemes.

· Assist in the training and development of our trainee and graduate engineers.

We're looking for:

· Substantial experience in highway structures inspection, maintenance, design, asset management and construction.

· Experience of working collaboratively with clients, contractors, stakeholders and multidisciplinary design teams.

· Good working knowledge of Design Manual for Roads and Bridges/Specification for Highway Works/Eurocodes relating to the design and maintenance of highway structures.

· Experience of mentoring bridge design staff.

· Proficient in the use of structural analysis & design software (e.g. LUSAS, TEDDS, RING & AutoCAD).

· A relevant Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.

· Chartered Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers or equivalent professional qualification.

· Excellent interpersonal skills and a team player with a ‘can do’ approach.

The position would usually be based in an office co-located with our client in County Hall in Oxford City Centre. We work out of a lively, vibrant workplace in a central location with access to fantastic amenities and public open space.  Oxford city centre is well connected to the public transport network including long-established park & ride facilities around the city.

We have been home working due to the pandemic for over a year – but have a team culture and IT systems to allow us to still work collaboratively and flexibly, and integrate new starters into the team.  As lockdown restrictions begin to ease, we will be continuing to review these arrangements.  It is expected that there will be a need to work some of the week in the office, but we will be encouraging staff to continue home-working for part of the week to help contribute to a good work-life balance.
